Greening Your Medicine Cabinet

Since it’s Earth Day, one of the things I’ve been thinking of is how easy it’s been to clean up my medicine cabinet and switch to safer products. This has obviously evolved throughout the years, but I’m so happy that all the products I use on a daily basis are safe, free from chemicals, effective, and not harming our environment.

I tidied up my medicine cabinet, and highlighted the things I use on a daily basis.

Shampoo and Conditioner – I’ve been ‘no-poo’ on and off for a few years, but found that the higher pH of baking soda was making my hair brittle. I’ve recently switched to mixing fine rye flour with water, and using that as my shampoo. It sounds strange, but it works, and I’m not worried about any chemicals on my hair or being washed down the drain. I use a apple cider vinegar/water rinse as my conditioner. It rinses clean and does not smell like vinegar at all!

I use Calendula & Rose Cleansing Grains as my face wash, and am so happy I’m not contributing to the plastic microbead accumulation in the lakes, oceans and rivers.

The personal care products I use after the shower are Balancing Face Oil and Rose Hydrosol for my face, Coconut Deodorant for my pits, and a homemade ‘lotion’ that’s half and half sweet almond oil and aloe vera gel, along with some essential oils. Other times I’ll use Soft Skin Balm, or straight coconut oil, depending on the day, my mood and the weather.

The only non green thing I’ve yet to switch to safer is mascara, and it’s the only make-up I use. That is next on my list!

Have you made any changes to your medicine cabinet? Do you have any plans to green your beauty routine?
